First Time Cannabis Consumption: A Guide to Every Method

First Time Cannabis Consumption: A Guide to Every Method

Trying cannabis for the first time can feel a bit like stepping into the unknown, but with the right preparation, it can be an enjoyable and relieving experience. With so many consumption methods available- smoking, vaping, edibles, and all of the nuances that come with them- it’s important to understand how each one works and how it might affect you as a first-time user.

  1. Start Low and Go Slow (With Any Method)

This golden rule applies to all cannabis consumption methods. Whether you’re smoking, vaping, eating an edible, or trying tinctures, it’s always best to start with a low dose and work your way up to a higher dose. It can be easy to overconsume if you’re not careful.

– For smoking or vaping: Take one small puff and wait for at least 15 minutes before deciding if you want more. Effects usually come on within a few minutes, so you’ll know fairly quickly if you’ve had enough.

– For edibles and capsules: Start with a low dose. 5 mg of THC or less is a good starting point. Be patient, and do not consume more than your initial dose- edibles take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in depending on your stomach’s digestion. Opting for an edible option that includes CBD can also help alleviate the high that THC can cause.

Tip: Take it SLOWLY! It’s easier to add more later than it is to “undo” a high.

  1. Stay Hydrated and Listen to Your Gut- Literally!

Cannabis can sometimes cause dry mouth (commonly known as “cottonmouth”). This is totally normal, but having a bottle of water nearby can make a big difference in your comfort level. No matter how you choose to consume, sipping water throughout your experience will help keep you feeling refreshed.

For those who experience any fluctuations in their blood sugar throughout the day, keep some calorie-dense snacks on hand! The “high” can sometimes cause your blood sugar to drop if it is too intense.

Tip: While water and electrolyte drinks are great options, avoid alcohol or other substances when trying cannabis for the first time. Mixing can intensify the effects in unexpected ways, including dizziness or nausea.

  1. Have a Plan in Case You Get Too High

Getting “too high” can happen, especially if you’re new to cannabis. But don’t worry—there are a few tricks you can use to come back down if you start feeling uncomfortable:

-Stay calm: Remind yourself that it’s temporary, and the feeling will pass. Take deep breaths and try to picture yourself yawning- as strange as it sounds, it can regulate your breathing again if you start to panic, and help transition the “high” to more of a sleepy feeling. If you have a blanket on hand, wrap yourself up in it!

-Try CBD: CBD with no THC can help counteract the psychoactive effects of THC. If you have some on hand, taking a bit of CBD might help calm you down. Check out our extensive collection of Hemp/CBD as well!

– Distract yourself: Engage in a calming activity, like listening to music, watching something funny, or even taking a shower.

– Stay hydrated and snack: Drinking water or eating something can sometimes help alleviate the intensity of the high.

-Try Lemons or Peppercorns: Terpenes are commonly found in cannabis and help direct the “high” to have more of the effect you desire. For example, Limonene is found in certain sativa strains, and naturally occurring in lemons. Caryophyllene helps alleviate the “too-high” feeling, and is found in black peppercorns. Trying a slice of lemon can snap you out of the high feeling, and peppercorn can mellow the high.

Tip: Have some CBD on hand before you begin, just in case you want to balance out your experience.

  1. Know Your Cannabis Products

The type of cannabis you choose can also influence your experience. Different strains, potencies terpenes, and ratios of THC to CBD can impact how cannabis makes you feel. If you’re using cannabis for the first time, it’s a good idea to start with a product that has a balanced THC-to-CBD ratio (such as 1:1) for a milder, more balanced effect.

– THC-dominant strains/products will have more intense psychoactive effects (the “high”).

– CBD-dominant strains/products provide more therapeutic relief without as much of a high.

– Balanced or “ratio” products (with equal THC and CBD) can offer the best of both worlds- relaxation and euphoria, without going overboard.

Tip: Check with your wellness advisor for product recommendations tailored to first-timers, especially if you’re looking for a specific effect like relaxation or creativity.

5. Choose the Right Setting

Your environment plays a huge role in your first cannabis experience. Find a comfortable, familiar space where you feel relaxed and safe. Whether it’s your living room, a cozy outdoor spot, or hanging out with a trusted friend, being in a chill atmosphere can help ensure that you have a positive experience.

– Solo or social?: Some people prefer to try cannabis alone to get a better sense of how it affects them, while others feel more at ease in a social setting with friends. Either way, having someone around who is experienced with cannabis can help if you have any questions or concerns.

Tip: Have some snacks, water, blankets, and entertainment like music or a movie on hand to keep the vibe mellow.

Trying cannabis for the first time is an exciting experience, and with a little preparation, you can make sure it’s a positive one. By starting slow, choosing the right setting, and understanding how different methods work, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying cannabis in a way that feels right for you. Whether you go for a classic joint, try a tasty edible, or experiment with tinctures, remember to stay hydrated, be patient, and most of all—have fun doing what feels right to YOU! The world of cannabis is full of possibilities, so take your time exploring and find the method that suits you best.

Cannabis For Sleep and The Effects on Our Dreams

Cannabis For Sleep and The Effects on Our Dreams

CANNABIS: HOW IT EFFECTS OUR SLEEP AND DREAMS
By: Dan Taylor, Trilogy Marketing Coordinator

ELLICOTT CITY, Md- March is National Sleep Awareness Month and health experts want to make sure you are getting a good night’s rest with or without the use of cannabis.

Health experts say quality sleep is crucial for overall well-being. Adequate sleep improves cognitive function, mood, and immune system function while reducing the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, it supports memory consolidation and enhances learning. Poor sleep quality, on the other hand, can lead to fatigue, irritability, and impaired decision-making.

Many folks who have issues sleeping, are relying on cannabis to help. Certain cannabinoids in cannabis, such as CBD, are believed to have relaxing properties that may promote better sleep. However, the report in Leafly points that it’s essential to approach cannabis use for sleep with caution, as research on its long-term effects and efficacy is ongoing. Balancing the potential benefits with any associated risks is crucial when considering cannabis as a sleep aid.

When it comes to cannabis and the sleep department—it is like a wild ride influenced by a bunch of factors. People swear by cannabis, especially the high-THC, for helping them catch some Zs or making them feel all sleepy. But here is the twist: if you are on a THC break after some chronic use, be ready for some wonky sleep, complete with wild dreams. According to a report in Leafly, dosing, how often you indulge, your tolerance, age, and even your gender—all these play a part in how cannabis hits your sleep button.

Now, to really get what is going on, we need to dive into sleep architecture. Sleep is not just one thing: it is a whole journey with different stops, like Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and slow-wave sleep (SWS). THC, the main player in cannabis, jumps into action and allows you to fall asleep fast, more of that deep SWS, and a bit less of the dreamy REM sleep. But if you are a long-time cannabis connoisseur, your sleep pattern might do a little dance during a THC hiatus—less deep sleep at first, then a rebound of vivid dreams.

Enter the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the behind-the-scenes hero. The CB1 receptors in the ECS, responsible for THC’s trippy effects, hang out in the brain circuits that manage sleep. And here’s where it gets interesting: the report in Leafly says these receptors show off differently in men and women, and they also change the game as we age.

THC might give you a smooth entry into dreamland at first, but it is like a personalized experience. Your journey could be affected by the type of cannabis, how much you have used before, and yes, even your gender. Keep the party going too long, and you might need to up your THC game for the same effects. Take a break, and you might hit a bump with temporary sleep weirdness and intense dreams. It is all part of the intricate dance between cannabis and sleep.

TRILOGY ASKS CUSTOMERS TO ‘RISE UP’ THIS MONTH TO SUPPORT LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER

By: Dan Taylor, Trilogy Marketing Coordinator

ELLICOTT CITY, Md- Trilogy Wellness and Rise Above Animal Rescue and Sanctuary want to make sure cats and dogs who are placed in shelters go home to loving and caring homes.

The entire month of March, we’re offering guests and patients at Trilogy Wellness a chance to donate to this wonderful organization in Pasadena. If you donate $5.00, you will receive a $5.00 bounce back card to use on your next visit.

This campaign to find pets loving homes will coincide with Trilogy’s 6thCannaversary”, the weekend of March 22-24. That weekend will also give people a chance to adopt a pet right on site at Trilogy Wellness during our Rise Above Rescue Adoption Event, on Saturday March 23rd from 12:00pm-4:00pm.

Last year, Trilogy Wellness helped set a record for the organization. It was the most animals they have ever adopted at one event. Six cats and four puppies went home to some loving owners.

“We focus on animals that need the most help – those that are sick, injured, elderly, feral, or need extensive medical care.”

Rise Above Animal Rescue and Sanctuary became an official non-profit animal rescue in 2018. Prior to this status, the organization had been in place for years prior with the goal and focus always being on the welfare of animals.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an estimated 3.1 million dogs and 3.2 million cats are in U.S. animal shelters.

Approximately 2 million dogs and 2.1 million cats are adopted from animal shelters each year.

Scientists say cannabis could help treat Covid-19 and those with ‘long-covid’

SCIENTISTS SAY CANNABIS COULD HELP TREAT COVID-19 AND THOSE WITH ‘LONG-COVID’

ELLICOTT CITY, Md- Scientists are seeing a direct correlation when it comes to cannabis helping patients with COVID-19 and what’s been called “long-covid” or people who experience symptoms for months.

According to a report in Leafly, frequent cannabis users who inhale the product, were able to suppress what’s called “cytokine storms”. This occurs in patients with COVID and can lead to severe respiratory distress and organ failure.

Although many patients recover from COVID just fine, not everyone does. Some of the “Long COVID” or “long haulers” have symptoms that include heart issues, fatigue, PTSD, and decrease appetite. But the article also points out that there were mixed results in several other separate studies that suggested cannabis use increased infection rates or caused more people do die from the respiratory disease.

Scientists say in this latest study by MDPI, a particular enzyme receptor called ACE2 binds to SARS-CoV-2, but certain cannabinoids found in cannabis, help block or reduce the virus’ ability to infect people.

Authors of the study do caution that these studies are in their early stages and that more research needs to be done
